Providing a REAL safe place to practice – Crisis Intervention

Many social work students have their first taste of dealing with a crisis in a real situation.  They may have read books on Crisis Intervention as part of their degree but what happens when they are faced with a real client in crisis and they feel vulnerable and afraid themselves?  We have been working with South Lanarkshire Council and their Social Work Academy degree students for the last two years to support students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to manage these situations.

For three hours the room becomes Tracy’s flat and the participants wrestle with the crisis in the room.  They use their combined and individual experience and skills to guide the social worker through the maze of difficulties she encounters.  The session not only explores the physical dangers but also the emotional effects on Anne-Marie, the social worker, when she realises that Tracy’s crisis situation brings up elements of her own past that she thought she had dealt with.  The experience brings social workers as close as possible to a real life situation.
