What is an Interactive Live-Action Scenario?

A key drama method that we use is an Interactive Live-Action Scenario.  This flexible process – always managed by a facilitator – provides a vehicle through which the workshop theme can be explored and the learning objectives realised.  As its name implies, this method involves actors presenting a story (or case study) live with which the participants interact.   The scenario depicts a parallel work environment in which the characteristics, behaviours, attitudes etc are recognisable to the participants.   One character, the ‘protagonist’, is the one with the power to effect change in the story.  The protagonist is the character that the participants work through and the one they will most identify with.   Participants have two roles in this process:

  • as investigators they witness scenes, direct the action and identify what the problems and issues are;
  • as advisors they help the protagonist to deal with the situation presented.

The actors improvise in response to participants’ suggestions, challenges etc revealing possible outcomes.  It allows participants to try out different strategies.  If something does not work they can simply ‘rewind’ and try something else.  In so doing, it reveals the human costs and benefits of particular atttiudes, behaviours and courses of action.
