The Innerwick Experience: transformational leadership in action

Since 2007 the leadership team at East Lothian Council has set about transforming the organisation’s culture and approach to leadership.  Central to this process has been the creation of a set of qualities and values that express “the way we do things round here” or The East Lothian Way.space to grow

A transformational leadership programme – The Innerwick Experience – was developed that uses a unique combination of activities (involving drama and the outdoors).  This programme demonstrates the important role that experiential learning plays in enabling leaders to understand and begin to implement a practice that is transformational.   You can download the case study here.

Alan Blackie is the Chief Executive of East Lothian Council.  This is his evaluation of how we’ve contributed to developing leadership capacity within his organisation.

“Forum Interactive’s contribution to leadership development for our directors and senior managers has been innovative, energetic and enormously helpful.  The carefully structured process was utterly different and it allowed all of us to discover greater levels of creativity and engagement together.

It made the concept of transformational leadership come alive in an immediate and concrete way.  It has made a critical contribution to the future cohesion and vision we want to achieve as a successful management group which leads and delivers public services of the highest quality.”

A Place to Grow describes how metaphor has been used in this leadership programme to understand and communicate a vision of cultural change.

Developing leadership capacity describes the theoretical underpinnings of our approach to leadership.

The Dynamic Space is a transformational leadership programme that we run.

It’s great to see this on the Forum Interactive website – and to see our efforts being recognised – the programme continues and has been externally evaluated as being a very positive experience for all involved.
