Influencing upwards & sideways

Line management authority enables you to get others (your direct reports) to do what you want. Of course, as well as telling them what to do you’ll need to use your influence to shape their attitudes and actions. But this is always easier when they know you’re the one in charge.

However, your ability to influence colleagues or those senior to you relies on your powers of persuasion. For some this will not be a problem because it was this challenge that attracted them to their job in the first place and they’ve developed the necessary confidence and skills.
