In the press – Make Yourself Heard

This article of mine – Make Yourself Heard – appears in the February edition of Health and Safety at Work magazine.  It argues that HSE professionals need to broaden their knowledge base and develop their influencing skills in order to communicate a stronger message to board directors and senior managers.

One of the contributors is Fraser Allen, Head of HSE at City Holdings:

“To influence at board level, it is essential to put health and safety in a strategic context, looking beyond health and safety to the business context you’re operating in…if you want to help shape the overall business you need to understand business and financial strategy.”

The article outlines six steps to help HSE professionals to increase their influence:

  • Know why health & safety is important to you
  • Know why health & safety is important to the business
  • Know who you want to influence and what you want to achieve
  • Look at your message as a story
  • Find your natural communication style
  • Decide how to tell the story.
Persuading board members to treat health & safety as central to business strategy may be daunting for those professionals who do not see themselves as ‘good with people’.  But anyone can improve their people skills.
The starting point is to recognise and strengthen the qualities and skills you already have.  The six steps outlined in this article will get you started.
