Safe as Houses is based on the BP Texas City Oil Refinery Disaster in 2005 in which an explosion killed 15 workers and injured a further 170. The investigation showed that basic safety procedures were ignored by workers while an alarm which could have provided warning was disabled. The flawed thinking and decision-making in operation is highlighted in the play by the central characters: Complacency and Hindsight
